Ride (QuickTime)
Made in 2003, and similar to the 1999 short film Strip Mall that I posted last time, Ride is a brief experiment in using split screens to combine two sets of footage, moving through two separate but visually related spaces.
When I made Ride, I was compiling a series of short video sketches for my research, and did not spend more than one or two days to shoot and edit each piece. With more time and effort, I can imagine expanding the short to include other ideas. A pedestrian could appear with different actions, reactions and expressions in the two subframes. The driving route could be planned more precisely in terms of locations and timing, in order to further produce and enhance the dreamlike moments when subframes merge to present singular spaces. Different weathers in the two subframes would be fun to play with: rain starting and stopping in and out of sync, or summer shown alongside winter.

I really enjoy this journal - my favorite split-screen music video that I can think of (off the top of my head) is cibo matto's "sugar water" - that'd be worth posting if you have a decent quality copy imo.
